[1" class="description-paragraph] "..1.....rN.iii.,::. .nlv.,i.r.,~iarn. rn i ROD FOR A WELL STRING BACKG ROU N D[0001 ] In Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, some petroleum reservoirs lie in friable formations. When wells penetrating these reservoirs are produced, particularly reservoirs in sandy formations, sands and fines are produced along with the petroleum in the reservoirs. These sands and fines often block or restrict flow in the producing wells. When a well becomes stuck with sand, expensive clean out operations are required to place the well on production again. SUMMARY [2" class="description-paragraph] [0002] There is provided a device that assists in cleaning out wells, and preventing the problem of blocked wells. Drive rod or rods of a well drive string, which may include a progressive cavity pump, are provided with coiled rod wrapped around the drive rod or rods, and securely attached to the rods, as by welding. The drive rod may be straight rod, continuous rod or may be straight rod welded together to form a continuous rod. In a method of operation of the coil equipped drive rod, rotation of the rod causes a lifting and fluidizing effect on well fluids and solids, thereby helping to prevent the well's production pipe from becoming fully or partially blocked with produced solids, such as sand. 1 , i.ia~~~,v Imw,.iiw.., m [3" class="description-paragraph] [0003] These and other aspects of the device and method are set out in the claims, which are incorporated here by reference. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES [4" class="description-paragraph] [0004] Embodiments will now be described with reference to the figures, in which like reference characters denote like elements, by way of example, and in which: Fig. 1 shows a rod for a well string with a coiled rod wrapped around the rod; Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the rod and coiled rod of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a rod with two coiled rods wrapped around the rod;and Fig. 4 illustrates plural rods connected in a well string that is suspended in a well. DETAILED DESCRIPTION [5" class="description-paragraph] [0005] Referring to Fig. 1, a straight drive rod 10 extends between couplers 12 and 14. Each coupler 12, 14 includes a divergent section 16, flange 18, wrench receiver 20, flange 21 and threads 22. In a well string, the threads 22 thread into a double female coupler 23, and a succession of rods 10 are thus connected together to make the well string. The flange 21 typically has the widest outer diameter of the rod elements, and that diameter is essentially the same as the outer diameter of the double female w .,....~",.... .al..~_~..lw".....r.. coupler. The couplers 12, 14 and female couplers 23 pass through a guide when entering the well, and the guide aperture may limit the size of the couplers. The rods 10 may be complete or partial rods, known as pony rods. [6" class="description-paragraph] [0006] A coiled rod 24 is welded to the straight rod 10 (for example see the weld at 27 in Fig. 2) and wrapped around the straight rod 10 to form a coil around the straight rod 10. The welds may be spot welds, or may be continuous along the length of the contact between the coiled rod 24 and the straight rod 10, depending on the desired strength of the joint. The coiled rod 24 in the embodiment shown has a maximum diameter from outer edge 25 to outer edge 26 equal to or less than the maximum outer diameter 31 of the couplers 12, 14 so that the coiled rod 24 may pass through the guide aperture and/or fit easily into the production pipe. The diameter of the couplers 12, 14 includes any coating on the couplers. The couplers 12, 14 of any one rod will usually have essentially the same diameter, but in case they do not, then in one embodiment the coiled rod sweep between lines 25 and 26 may be less than or equal to the greater of the coupler diameters. [7" class="description-paragraph] [0007] The coiled rod 24 may extend continuously from coupler 12 to coupler 14, or may be provided with small breaks that do not interfere with the augering action of the coiled rod 24. The coiled rod 24 may terminate short of the divergent sections 16, or may thin at the ends of the coiled rod 24 as the coiled rod 24 rides onto the divergent sections 16. The coiled rod .,, , . .,... ,. , ~.~..mirv " ,. rv I~ a. ~..,Y,~ ., .n i. 24 may be circular in cross-section as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 shows the rod as circular, and the coiled rod 24 as elliptical, but the cross-section is perpendicular to the axis of rod 10, and at an angle to the helically winding axis of coiled rod 24, so the coiled rod 24, though circular in cross-section in a section perpendicular to the coiled rod axis, is shown as elliptical.Depending on the angle of the axis of the coiled rod 24 in relation to the axis of rod 10, the elliptical representation of coiled rod 24 could also correspond to an elliptical cross-section of coiled rod 24 in a section perpendicular to the axis of coiled rod 24. The coiled rod 24 may have a cross-section diameter of at least 1 /64 inch and less than or equal to 1 /2 inch, although other dimensions may be used depending on the application (for example depending on the diameter of couplers used or ID of production pipe) and the size of drive rod on which the coiled rod 24 is wrapped. In the case of a coiled rod 24 having a non-circular cross-section, the cross-section diameter may be taken to be the diameter of the smallest circle that the rod cross-section fits within. [8" class="description-paragraph] [0008] As shown in Fig. 3, more than one coiled rod 24 may be attached to the rod 10, so that the coiled rods 24 may form a double, triple etc helix. The angle of the coiled rod 24 with respect to the axis of the straight rod may be chosen for a desired end result. The pitch of the coiled rod 24 may also be chosen for a desired end result. The pitch is the vertical distance between flights of the coiled rod 24, and in the case of 1 /2 inch diameter circular rod used for the coiled rod 24, the pitch may be (but is not " , , ," , ~. ......J., " ~.,~i~~ .i li ".,..l.n.~.,. m i restricted to) 2 and 1 /2 inches (five times the flight distance). [9" class="description-paragraph] [0009] The coiled rod 24 is coiled in a direction that promotes lifting of fluid and solids in a well. As shown in Fig. 4, the rod 10 is used by connecting plural rods 10 to form a well string, suspending the well string in a well 28, with each rod 10 having a coiled rod 24 wrapped around it. The well string terminates in for example a progressive cavity pump 30. The well string is then rotated to cause the coiled rods 24 to fluidize (that is, maintain solids and liquids in the well bore in a fluid state) and auger well fluids and solids upwards. That is, rotation of the rod 10 causes the coiled rod 24 to provide a lifting and fluidizing action on well fluids and solids. The coiled rod 24 sweeps out a cylindrical volume within the well that is kept open by the augering effect of the coiled rod 24. The cylindrical volume has a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the coiled rod 24 and a length equal to the length of the coiled rod 24 along the rod 10. Sand and other solids are mobilized by the rotating coiled rod 24 and raised towards the surface. [10" class="description-paragraph] [0010] The diameter of the rod comprising the coil and/or the pitch of the coil does not have to remain the same or constant over a given distance and/or the length of coil or coils. This may be advantageous in terms of dealing with deviated wells or for different depths within the well bore.[0011 ] When the OD of the coil/rod combo is less than the OD of the couplers (coated or uncoated), there is lower pressure drop (better oil flow) past the coils and this reduces potential coil to production pipe contact . ,... .k.. ..,.".a.w... "1,.,..,.,!"." ... .. points (wear points). However, in one embodiment, the coil/drive rod combination's maximum OD need only be slightly less than the ID of the production tubing, and is not limited by the OD of the couplers 23. This design parameter will reduce the likelihood coil to tubing wall contact as well as coil to tube wall friction while maintaining maximum coil to fluid contact producing maximum lift/fluidization of the oil and solids.[0012] In one embodiment, the coiled rod 24 may run from the shoulder 21 at one end of the drive rod 10 to the shoulder 21 at the other end when using 12 ft or shorter pony rods as the drive rod 10. If longer sections of drive rod are used the drive rod sections may include one or more centralizers (not shown) half way along or at various points along the drive rod to keep the coiled rod 24 centered in the tubing. This would require one or more small breaks in the coil. Shorter pony rods may also require centralizers at one or more points along the rod.[0013] The rods may also be welded together in the field or offsite to form a continuous rod. In this case, the coiled rods 24 may be welded onto the straight rods before or after the continuous rods are welded together, and coiled rods 24 may have any desirable length. In one embodiment, the coiled rod may extend an arbitrary length along the continuous rod, but preferably over a majority of the continuous rod, with continuous sections of coiled rod of six feet or more. Shorter coil sections may be required under some conditions. Additionally, sections of coiled rod equipped drive . .i a ...~.~,m.... .oP.n.~.~w. w i.. ,. ". 1- -,...,*."..... . " ~, .n ,., rod may be added to the bottom end, directly above the pump, of the continuous drive rod string.[0014] In the claims, the word "comprising" is used in its inclusive sense and does not exclude other elements being present. The indefinite article "a" before a claim feature does not exclude more than one of the features being present. Immaterial modifications may be made to the embodiments described here without departing from what is covered by the claims.
